Leonard N. Smith, D.Min.
Pastor Smith was born in Baltimore, Maryland and partly raised in the District of Columbia, Dr. Smith’s walk with God was fueled by the loving tutelage of his grandmother. It’s become familiar practice to honor his grandmother’s discipleship by infusing stories of her Christian teachings into his powerful sermons. Lessons learned inside the boundaries of grandma’s house have matured into a ministry preached on four continents. His commitment to pastoral ministry excellence began in 1985 when Union Baptist Church (Gordonsville, Virginia) called him as their pastor. Four and a half years later, he was chosen to shepherd Rivermont Baptist Church (Lynchburg, Virginia). Mount Zion called the budding author in 1991 to become Dr. Oswald G. Smith’s (the two pastors are not related) successor.

Through the dedicated leadership of Dr. Smith, since 1991, Mount Zion is growing both spiritually and numerically; as it continues to flourish in “Becoming a Kingdom Focused Church.” Via programs which provide tutoring, food assistance, financial and missions support, the spirit of Mount Zion stretches beyond its walls and is extended to local community residents and agencies, as well as people and organizations throughout the state, nation and internationally.

From March 2005 to May 2008, Dr. Smith served as President of the Richmond, Virginia Seminary, Richmond, Virginia, one of his alma maters. Then from May 2009 to May 2012, he served as the President of the Virginia Baptist State Convention – Virginia's and the Nation’s oldest African-American Convention of Baptist Churches. His three-year term was characterized by integrity, innovation and impassioned leadership. In addition, he’s served his community as Chaplain for both the Arlington County Fire and Police Departments, and a member of numerous county, denominational, educational, nonprofit and State Boards & Commissions.

Dr. Smith presently serves as the Chancellor of the Richmond Virginia Seminary, (Richmond, Virginia); and is faithfully active in the Progressive National Baptist Convention, Inc., where he has served in numerous capacities. He is also a member of Global United Fellowship and proudly serves as the Global Leader of Pastors and a member of the Executive Council; and an Advisory Board member of Gospel Heritage Foundation. He is a sought after lecturer, teacher and preacher for churches, conferences and conventions.

Equipped with a Master of Divinity, a Doctorate of Ministry, and nine honorary degrees, Dr. Smith teaches online classes at two seminaries as he furthers his own education. He is the author of a book entitled, “We Need to Talk: Saying What We Need to Say Without Hurting Each Other.” Among Dr. Smith’s many achievements, nothing renders him prouder than his personal achievement of being the loving father of his adult children, Tiffany and Phillip.
